In 1962, the stars of famed rivals Bette Davis and Joan Crawford were fading. Along came a last clutch at stardom with Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?, a darkly comic tale that mirrored the real tensions between two screen legends desperate for screen time. The film’s then unheard of and controversial plot meant that it originally received an X rating in the UK, and it still has the power to shock.
In a crumbling mansion, Davis is an aging child star left to care for her wheelchair-bound sister Blanche (Crawford). Crawford and Davis attack the roles with all they’ve got as the plot descends into ‘hag horror’.
