Burton’s Doorway to Another World – The Bath House Folly

by Kate Maddison

Another world

Visitors to the Burton Manor Gardens will be intrigued by ‘The Bath House Folly’. Newly installed in the Walled Garden following its appearance at the Royal Horticultural Society Show at Tatton Park, this creation is on loan to Burton Manor Gardens.

Made primarily of re-used wood, the Bath House Folly was created by artist Kate Maddison. The structure is inspired by the Harrogate Pump Room, evoking the health-giving properties of spa water and cold bathing. The angled mirror reflects the sky to create the illusion of A doorway to another world’.

Follies are a peculiarly British phenomenon created for pleasure, and this example echoes the Grade II listed formal garden at Burton designed in 1908 by Thomas Mawson.

Kate Maddison is an award-winning public artist with 30 years experience of creating artwork for public and private commissioners inspired by nature, humanity and architecture. At the heart of her approach and practice is high quality craftsmanship and sustainability. Kate believes that creative practice should be environmentally, economically and socially responsible. “I like to appreciate what is there and add what is needed, or provoke thought in others to this end. Above all it must be enjoyable”
