  1. Join the Wirral Way at Station Road, Neston, or at Church Lane, Neston.
  2. After 3 miles, join Riverbank Road, which becomes Davenport Road, for ½ mile
  3. Either turn right to rejoin Wirral Way, or fork left along Wittering Lane then left into Banks Road and right to rejoin the Wirral Way just before a left bend
  4. 1 mile later, turn left onto the cycle/ horse track.
After 200 yards the Thurstaston Country Park on your left provides information, toilets, and sometimes refreshments in the shop. Nearby is GJ’s Coffee Shop, 10 – 5.30 every day.
  5. The Wirral Way ends at Grange Road, West Kirby, by shops, cafés, pubs, and the railway station.
  6. Turn left onto Grange Road, which becomes Meols Drive.
  7. Turn left into Riversdale Road, and at the end go down the steps on your right onto the beach.
  8. It is possible to cycle along the beach except at high tide: find sand that is not too dry and not too wet.
(8a. To avoid the beach, from the end of the Wirral Way cross Grange Road into Orrysdale Road, which becomes Anglesey Road. Where the road bends right go left onto a cycle track alongside a playing field and golf course. Just before Hoylake station turn left into Station Road, at the roundabout take the second exit – TAKE CARE! – into King’s Gap*.)
  9. After 1 mile, go over the sandstone rocks or up the concrete ramp into Stanley Road.
  10. At the end, turn left along King’s Gap*, and join North Parade, which becomes Meols Parade.
  11. For the next three miles you are on a wide concrete path, still by the sea and in the North Wirral Coastal Park, where technically you should push your bike.
  12. Between Leasowe Golf Course and Wallasey Golf Course, you join Sustrans Route 56, where you turn right and left onto the cycle route on an embankment.
  13. Turn right along the coastal cycle path and King’s Parade for 1¾ miles to New Brighton. Following redevelopment in New Brighton, the cycle route is not clear. If you keep along the coast you will find some narrow sections with blown sand, and you may need to stop for walkers.
  14. At a roundabout, take the first exit along Marine Promenade.
There are restaurants, pubs and cafés.
  15. As you turn south you enter Tower Promenade, Magazines Promenade, and Egremont Promenade, which are traffic-free.
The Egremont pub serves food, and upstairs has splendid views of the Mersey .
  16. Sandon Promenade and Seacombe Promenade are also traffic-free.
    There are pubs and cafés.
  17. At Seacombe Ferry at the roundabout take the first exit into Birkenhead Road (A554). The footpath has been marked for cycles.
  18. At the roundabout take the first exit over Four Bridges. At the next roundabout take the first exit along Morpeth Wharf, with the Irish Ferry terminal on your left. Ignore signs saying public footpath, and footprints on the tarmac. Push your bike over the kerb and cycle along the edge of the Mersey to Woodside Ferry.
  19. Dismount and push your bike to the right, over the light-controlled crossings and across Bridge Street to Hamilton Square Station.
  20. Take the train to Hooton Station.
  21. From Hooton Station, turn left along Hooton Road and immediately over the bridge go left down a steep ramp onto the Wirral Way.
  22. At Heath Lane, continue straight ahead via a gap in the wooden fence.
  23. After one mile, Hadlow Road station offers toilets, and there are pubs and a café in Willaston.
  24. The sandstone cutting can be wet at the bottom of the ramp by Mellock Lane. Cycle along Station Road, Neston. At the mini-roundabout, take the third exit for the town centre, with pubs, café, toilets, library etc.
